CONVENTIONS AND NOTES:
* These data files were used to prepare Colorado Health Market Review 2008. Files are organized using Microsoft Excel for Macintosh computers and are copied onto a CD.
* Unless otherwise noted, all data are taken from the annual statements that each HMO submits to the Colorado Division of Insurance, which follow the standard HMO blank of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The detailed financial (balance sheet and income-expense) and enrollment data are generally included for 1991-2007 and the second quarter of 2008. The spreadsheets also include some of the numbers for 1989-1991 that appear in the five-year summary table of the NAIC report. My research was selective, and these files do not include every data item that could be gleaned from the reports.
* Some historical notes: FHP bought Aetna's Colorado HMO in 1993. In 1994, it bought TakeCare which earlier had purchased Comprecare. In turn, PacifiCare acquired FHP in 1998. Also in 1995, United HealthCare bought MetraHealth, including MetLife HMO of Colorado. Foundation Health bought Southern Colorado Health Plan. Foundation Health and the parent of QualMed combined and filed a joint report for 1998. QualMed has since exited the Colorado marke. Aetna ( U.S. Health Care) bought Frontier Community Health Plan in 1996. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield bought Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado in 2000 and the HMO business of Sloan's Lake Health Care.
