CONVENTIONS AND NOTES: * The data set is a series of spreadsheets developed in preparing Ohio Health Market Review 2009 * Files are organized using Microsoft Excel for Macintosh computers and are copied onto a CD. The files can be used for PC/Windows personal computers although formatting may be slightly different. * Most data are taken from the annual statements that each HMO submits to the Ohio Department of Insurance, which follow the standard HMO blank of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. However, some HMOs operate as a line of business of an insurer, and do not file the full NAIC HMO blank. Currently that includes Health Maintenance Plan (Anthem). The detailed financial (balance sheet and income-expense) and enrollment data are generally included for 1995-2008. The spreadsheets also include some second quarter of 2009 data and some summary numbers for 1992-1994 that appear in the five-year summary table of the NAIC report. My research was selective, and these files do not include every data item that could be gleaned from the reports. * The spreadsheets include hospital information that was gathered from a variety of stage agencies and Medicare cost reports. In addition, we requested that HMOs provide supplementary data regarding their enrollment by region of the state. The returns were limited to a few HMOs, but we have included that in the data set. * Most of the files include additional analysis which begins below the base data tables or in other sheets within the workbook. Spreadsheets in the first set are bolded.
